(Travel by bus to San Francisco International Airport and fly to Frankfurt, Germany)
In order to get an early and less stressful start to the trip, we packed suitcases the night before and Shannon spent the night at our house. We woke up about 5:00, ate breakfast, showered and dressed and left the house at 6:45 am. We arrived at CCC at 7:30. I unloaded the luggage, along with Cathy and Shannon, and parked our 10 year old Ford Taurus in the church maintenance yard.
As I feared, we looked a little silly with our three small suitcases when the majority of people were taking 2-3 large suitcases. When we started to load the luggage on the bus I was thinking that we made the right decision to pack ‘light.’
The church provided ‘goodie bags’ for all the travelers which consisted of a notebook, pen and candy. Forty-six travelers boarded the bus that would take us to the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) – about a two hour drive. Before we left and while sitting on the bus, we received some bad news and some good news. The bad news is that Pastor Glen Cole would not be making the trip with us. We have known Pastor Glen Cole for many years and were disappointed to hear the news. The good news was that Pastor Glen Cole offered a prayer for our safety and a rich spiritual journey.

The drive to SFO was as good as we could hope for - not much traffic and no other problems as we arrived at SFO at approximately 9:30. We were dropped off at the Lufthansa check-in counter where we received our boarding passes for Row 42 Seats H, J and K. The flight was scheduled to leave at 1:55 pm, so we had a few hours to explore SFO.
The first leg of our trip was to fly to Frankfurt, Germany, using the northern flight plan (over Canada, Greenland and England). It’s a 6,000 mile, 10-11 hour flight which no one was looking forward to. We saw two movies on the flight; the 1st movie was titled ‘Catch and Release’ starring Jennifer Garner and the 2nd movie was ‘Freedom Writers’ starring Hillary Swank. Dinner time on a plane is an occasion to pass the time as opposed to a culinary delight. Cathy and Shannon chose the pasta dinner while I chose chicken. We sampled each other’s food and agreed that my choice was best.
